to your hotel and overnight in Lima.
Day 2 - Lima / Iquitos / Amazon River (B,L,D)
Fly to the charming town of Iquitos and board the 19th Century riverboat
which will be your home for the next seven days. Accessible only by
air or water, Iquitos, the Peruvian jungle's largest city, remains pleasantly
insulated from the outside world.
Day 3 - Amazon River / Ucayali River (B,L,D)
Rise early to catch a glimpse of the fishermen paddling their handmade
canoes and village children smiling and waving from the river banks.
Heading towards the confluence of the Ucayalli and Maranon Rivers, it
is hard to miss the wide variety of exotic birds overhead. In the afternoon,
head deeper into the Amazon, stopping off at the small Amazon village
of Riberenos.
Day 4 - Ucayali River / Yanallpa (B,L,D)
Jump aboard speed boats and explore some lesser-traveled tributaries
in search of elusive primates, sloths, iguanas and toucans. Stop to
enjoy a picnic breakfast, and try to catch some catfish and piranhas
from a nearby stream. As soon as night falls, venture into the jungle
which is alive with nocturnal activity. Search for bats, black caiman,
poisonous frogs and other assorted creatures of the night.
Day 5 - Ucayali River / Sapote River (B,L,D)
Explore one of the Peruvian Amazon's best hidden secrets - the Sapote
River. Among the abundant fauna, discover a large variety of egrets,
macaws, capuchins and squirrel monkeys. Hike into the jungle to gawk
at the majestic Ceiba Kapok tree - the king of the forest.
Day 6 - Ucayali River / Marañon River (B,L,D)
Try your hand at bargaining for local crafts at the market. After lunch,
head off in search of gigantic aquatic plants called "Victoria
Regia" and stop off to visit Jibaro-Ashula Shaman, who will explain
his traditional use of medicinal plants and bless your journey with
a good luck ceremony.
Day 7 - Marañon River / Natural Amazon Park (B,L,D)
Today, head to the heights of the Amazon - the tree tops! A brisk morning
walk across the unique canopy walkway system allows for observing the
animals that inhabit the rooftop of the jungle. Pay tribute to the Rainforest
by planting a tree then begin the return voyage to Iquitos in the afternoon.
